Title: Long term investing outside of TSP/IRA
Post by: Emerald on December 03, 2012, 01:37:38 PM
I'm a federal employee, and do all my retirement investing thru my TSP traditional and Roth accounts (16%).

I'm looking to get a second job and would like to contribute 16% of my second paycheck as well.  Is there any advantage to investing this money outside of an IRA?  My Roth is fully funded thru the TSP.   The 16% would be long term investing.  I already have a fully funded emergency fund and I'm currently debt free.

Thanks.

You're Roth is not currently funded at all.

This is an older post so maybe you learned in between now and when you posted, but the TSP Roth DOES NOT count against your $5K Roth IRA contribution limit.  The "Roth" term confuses the issue.

You can contribute $17,500 to your TSP Roth (the annual 401K contribution limit) and $5K toward your Roth IRA outside of TSP.
