CRSP US Total Market Index
« on: November 25, 2017, 01:30:13 PM »
Hi there,

Quick question. Is Vanguard's VTI/VTSAX the only ETF/fund which tracks the CRSP US Total Market Index?

I thought people like iShares and Fidelity would have competing products, and while it's true other firms have Russell 3000s like, say, IWV, it looks like Vanguard is the only one using this exact index right now.

Yes, I believe that's correct.

Note that the CRSP indices are relatively new and Vanguard only switched to them in 2012. Prior to that they tracked the MSCI equivalent.

And prior to 2005 VTSAX tracked the Wilshire 5000.  Vanguard seems to be more concerned with ongoing cost minimization than they are about index purity and consistency. (Not necessarily a bad thing).
