If you're investing in Vanguard funds (and you probably should be), a Vanguard account is the way to go.

You can do a taxable investment account as well.

And while Vanguard is the gold standard for index investing, it isn't going to hurt to use Fidelity so you have your accounts in the same place if that makes it easier for you. They offer their own index series of funds that are competitive with Vanguard and in some cases are cheaper.

I use Fidelity as well because of previous 401k there. These days Schwab, Fidelity or Vanguard are really all pretty competitive options. I use Schwab and Fidelity. Keep in mind, Schwab is really nice because they refund the fees on your ATM use. And free checks too. Schwab is really pretty awesome. In fact, I started using them more for investments because I felt bad about just straight up freeloading off their free ATM fees when I traveled!

Fidelity's checking also has ATM fee refunds! I don't remember about the checks since it's been 10+ years and I haven't needed to reorder yet.

I use Fidelity for checking and work-sponsored retirement, and I use Vanguard for IRAs and taxable investing. And Ally for savings. And... anyway. I've let it get a bit complicated.

Fidelity also has a lot of great funds. I like FCNTX. Also, there's a new broker called Betterment, check it out.

I have all of my accounts with Schwab and have always been happy with them.  I like the fact they have brick and mortar locations that i can visit if i need to.  I really like the fact that for my checking account at Schwab Bank they refund all ATM fees.

Schwab's expense ratios on their in house market ETF's are very competitive, they are also commission free.
