My mother got a recommendation from a Vanguard advisor and to me it seems like they’re trying to make things more confusing than they need to (so you feel like you have to use their advising services probably).

Is there a tool online where I can enter in a mutual fund name and get a breakdown of its contents by market cap?  Ie VTEXAMPLE has 60% large cap, 30% mid cap, 10% small cap.  Something along those lines.

My goal is to illustrate that the recommended funds are too numerous and she can likely achieve the same end with fewer Vanguard index funds.

Morningstar instant X-ray is your tool
https://www.morningstar.com/instant-x-ray

The free version should be good enough for what you want. I think you'll need to sign up for a basic account, but you can dive deeper with premium account (free for 14 days)

Your library might have a premium subscription to X-Ray, too.

Does it need to be any more detailed than the 9-block stock style diagrams they provide for each fund?

Thanks all.  I'm surprised the only tool out there to accomplish this is behind a paywall.

@Wintergreen78 Good thought, but not all funds have the 9-square.  For example, VTSAX doesn't provide a breakdown (but the S&P 500 fund does).

I think Morningstar created the 9-box style diagram?  You can visit Morningstar's website and enter the mutual fund, then click "portfolio".  On the right you should see a "style box", where you need to click "weight" to get the percentages in each of the 9 parts of the style box (small/blend/large x value/blend/growth).

That was what helped me realize "Vanguard Small Cap" has for too many mid cap stocks in it.

As an aside, why are you getting an advisor at Vanguard?  They charge a percent of your portfolio, when you could manage your funds without it.
