HSA options
« on: December 01, 2019, 11:30:47 AM »
Hi All,
I recently got access to HSA account and I have put 100% in sp500 in ishares WFSPX. I also have old account where i had put in vtsax. Comparatively, this is not great as vtsax is $70-$80 per share, but this one is $375. Also wanted to diversify in others. Can you help me on this. right now i am not dependent on this money but would like to know which one of the below has more value per dollar. Please help me set this up diversify. If i have to blindly diversify i take all the options and split is equally, but not sure that is good.

The per share price of an index fund is completely irrelevant in any account that lets you buy fractional shares. You seem to have a number of nice low-cost index options. Which one to pick will depend on your preferred asset allocation, but that S&P 500 fund looks like a reasonable option if you want to invest in US stocks.

Please help me set this up....
The post is missing one of the most important columns: the annual fee for each fund.  This should be on the order of 0.1% but can vary widely.  You have some of the "usual suspects" for good choices but it depends on what, if any, charges the HSA administrator is adding.

Thanks Seattlecyclone and MDM. Sorry for the really really late reply. Running into lots of problems with this account, as I just found out the over contribution based on the non-covered months with HDHP. So i had to do a excess removal form. Anyway, hope to reply with more information in the coming weeks.

Sorry for the late response

thanks

Are you aware of the "last month rule" for HSAs? It says that if you're covered by a qualifying health plan for December you can make a full-sized contribution for that year as long as you maintain qualifying coverage through the end of the next year. Your distribution of excess contributions may not have been necessary after all.

Holy Crap. I did not know it. Too late, i already withdrew the excess. Facepunch. i should have asked here first. One of my colleagues told me of non-covered months should not contribute to HSA. Oh well, learnt about this new rule now. Thanks seattlecyclone. Learning something new everyday.

You can make contributions to your HSA for [a given tax year] until April 15, [of the next year].

If you do want to use the last month rule, be reasonably sure that you will remain eligible for the entire next year.  If you don't remain eligible, you'll owe an extra 10% in addition to the tax on the then non-deductible amount.
