HSA investment options help
« on: November 17, 2016, 10:57:43 AM »
Hello all, i just enrolled in HSA and was able to login to the portal and manage my investment options, here's what I have when it comes to Vanguard:
1. Vanguard 500 index investor class
2. Vanguard midcap index investor class
3. Vanguard small cap blend index
4. Vanguard small cap grow index
5. Vanguard total international stock idx
6. Vanguard total bond index inv

I don't see total stock market (VTSAX), is the 500 index investor class my best option?
Thanks,

This really depends on your personal situation, how risk tolerant you are, what your other retirement assets look like, and what you expect you'll have for medical bills in the next 10 years.

I'm 36 and healthy, and I don't expect to need any of my HSA funds in the next 10 years, so I'm putting it all in the s&p 500 fund. It's the least volatile and lowest expense ratio stock option I have available.

Others may want higher growth or to keep it in cash if they might need it in the next few years.

31 and healthy here. S&P 500 is exactly what I chose. Thanks for the response.

If you want small caps, adding 1/5th small cap and keeping 4/5ths S&P 500 would approximate the market.  Or you could add mid-cap and small-caps in market proportions (~70% S&P 500, ~20% mid-caps, ~10% small caps).
