Most of the financial planning services I've been finding just want to sell me things. I'm more interested in buying expertise and knowledge than new services. Can someone tell me how to find a good planner who fits my needs?

Specifically, I'm looking for the following:

I provide:
  • Our risk tolerance
  • Our current investments
  • Our current assets
  • Our current income
  • Future potential income
  • Future potential inheritance
  • Insurance (health, life, auto, umbrella)
  • Monthly expenses
  • Annual expenses (trips, big ticket purchases)
  • Goals, plans, vacations, service, etc
  • Current documents (wills, power of attorney, etc)

Planner provides:
  • Grade on our current financial status
  • Investment variance from risk tolerance analysis
  • Allocation adjustments/changes
  • Our Financial Knowledge weakness → Homework
  • Key areas we are potentially missing

Planner's credentials:
  • Certified Financial Planner
  • Fiduciary

Thanks!

Not exactly what you asked for, but
How To: Write a "Case Study" Topic
and/or
Asking Portfolio Questions - Bogleheads.org
may be worth considering.

I would call a couple CFP's and tell them on the phone what you are looking for.  Some will accomodate this and charge an appropriate fee for the service.  Keep in mind the fee per hour may be very high in order to make it worth their time for a one time fee.  I'm a CPA and don't accept annual clients or fee per hour consulting, not because I want to charge people for services they don't need, but because its not time efficient and a little more of a hassle.

For instance, instead of billing at $200/hr, it might be $400/hr.

He is based in Seattle, and I don't know if you have state specific issues to deal with, but I have recommended Patrick to a number of other Mustachians based on conversations I've had with him over beers talking about financial stuff as a friend.

If you were in Ontario, or even Canada, I'd say...

I don't see any in Utah, but the primary national network of fee-only planners is Garrett.

https://www.garrettplanningnetwork.com/

Some planners, while fee-only, will still be percent of assets.  But plenty are hourly or flat fee.  This is how I found the CFP I worked with before our son was born:  a one-time check heading into parenthood.

I work in the industry and there is a lot of variability from one advisor to the next, even within the same company. Some CFPs in my company won't advise on assets they don't manage, but most will and offer fee-only services to people who want them.

Forbes publishes a "Best in State" advisors list if you want someone local.

You sound like an ideal client! I hope you find someone who is a good fit.
