How many investment/retirement accounts do you have?
« on: May 17, 2016, 06:16:45 AM »
Anyone else frustrated with the amount of red tape and hoop-jumping just save your own money?  We have 11 accounts (not counting 2 checking accounts, 1 short term savings, 3 credit cards)

As DW and I enter a new phase in our retirement planning I'm trying to diversify our investments some more, and getting it balanced across all our accounts is really confusing me.  When we were just 100% TSM it was certainly easy.  But now I want to spread several asset classes across 10 accounts with vastly different balances and tax implications.  It seems nuts to me.  1 year ago we even had several more, but I finally got a SOLO this year and I've managed to roll several old 401(k)s together.  2 of our existing accounts can't be rolled together now, but will be able to be consolidated when they're free from red tape in 1.5 years, then we'll be down to 9, but we'll add a DAF and hopefully DW's SOLO 401(k) soon and go back up to 11.  My wife and I have been changing jobs every 3-5 years for 16 years now, it builds up a lot of accounts.

2 ROTH
2 403(b) Pre-Tax
1 403(b) ROTH
1 401(k) (stuck in red tape)
1 SOLO 401(k)
1 SIMPLE IRA (stuck in red tape)
1 457
1 401(a)
1 taxable brokerage
1 rollover IRA (empty, used for backdoor ROTH and other transitions)
1 long term savings account for cash

What's the norm around here?

Canadian here:

- RRSP
- TFSA
- Non-Reg

All with Questrade so one account login and three different tabs to access these accounts. Not a huge deal. I had duplicate accounts with my old financial advisor, but the last closed this year so I am enjoying a more simplified situation.

You could probably count my mortgage as a 4th FIRE account since I expect it will be used to harvest home equity for investment purposes.

I am managing accounts for DH and myself:

1 401K - just my current employer 401K
2 Roth IRA - 1 for each of us
2 Trad IRA - 1 for each of us
1 Taxable Investments Account (jointly held)
1 Long term savings account

All of those are held with Vanguard, with the exception of the current 401K (Fidelity) and the savings account (my savings direct).  7 sounds like a lot, but I feel like this is about as simple as it gets.  At least for managing this for a couple.

We used to have many many more accounts- I had 401Ks with 6 different employers in my career, DH has had one employer sponsored retirement plan, and our IRAs and taxable investments were previously held with American Funds.  Now we are quick to rollover and consolidate as we are able.  Both of our Traditional IRAs contain contributions sourced from former employer plans, and my Roth IRA also has former employer plan sourced contributions.  I'm really happy to have simplified in recent years.

I'm a red panda

Old job (1) 403b
Old job (2) 403b
Current job 403b
Husband TSP
Husband 401k
Husband HSA
My Roth IRA
Husband Roth IRA
High Interest Checking Account (up to a certain $ amount)
Savings Account (for roll over after the checking account)
Taxable Investment account with TIAA
Taxable Investment account with Vanguard

Plus I think I have teacher's retirement funds in Ohio and Texas, but I'm pretty sure both have actually zeroed out due to fees.

Too many (this is all for 1 person, except for one checking account!).  I wish I could simplify but there are good reasons to keep the set up as is, at least for now:

2 Taxable brokerage accounts (1 used, 1 not used but have to keep it because it's tied to a checking account I need)
2 Traditional IRAs
1 Roth IRA
1 401k
1 HSA
1 CD (ER Fund)
1 Savings Account (ER Fund)
1 Treasury Direct Account (I Bonds)
2 Checking Accounts (one is mine, one is joint with my DD)

And I'm not even counting a pension with my employer (lump sum) and an account that holds my unvested RSUs...

too many.

I put 13+  I don't think I reach that alone but certainly as a couple we do.

That would also include checking accounts.

3 pensions
3 RRSP (me)
2+RRSP (SO)
2 TFSA (me)
1+ TFSA (SO)
1 taxable investment account
4 Savings (me, SO, us)
6 checking (me, so, us, rentals)
2 LOC (me, us)

I did close one checking account in the past year and plan to close a second soon but open a LoC in its place.

I am also waiting for some small RRSP to mature so I can roll them into another account.

I am so glad I am not the only one.  Part of the reason was moving across country where access to banks changes. Another reason was opening a new account at a new bank because they gave better mortgage rates.

Too many!  I am working on moving things around.  In the end, this is what I want:

(2 because we are 2 people)
2 work pensions (no control over these, so I don't count them)
2 rrsp
2 tfsa
2 taxable (just hisa emergency funds, in the future could branch out to index funds, this would add another 2 accounts)
1 chequing
2 credit cards

Voted 9 in the poll:

MrsDanDarc (5) - 401a, 457b, Roth IRA (American Funds - still need to roll this over), Roth IRA - Vanguard, tIRA - Vanguard
DanDarc (4) - Roth Solok, Traditional SoloK, Roth IRA - Vanguard, tIRA - Vanguard

So 9 investment / retirement accounts going down to 8 until we open a joint taxable brokerage and are back up to 9 again.

Some seem to be counting savings / checking as well:

Also have 2 online savings accounts (one for eFund and one for parking estimated taxes until due), 1 checking account, and 9 savings accounts (various sinking funds) at local bank.  Add my "jar of change" and a line-item for our house (at cost) and that's every asset we track in our net worth.  None of these I consider part of the 'stache - basing our FIRE decision on only the 9 accounts listed above.

Vanguard: Roth IRA; tIRA; taxable brokerage

Fidelity: Taxable account containing exactly one cent which I am not allowed to withdraw because it's under the minimum withdrawal limit. They paid me a penny in interest after I emptied my account but was not allowed to close it because I had to wait for tax forms. Not worth the effort to deal with it so I guess it will sit there forever.

I'm not sure if that counts as two or four since the Vanguard ones are all under the same umbrella account.

1 old job pension

1 SIPP
1 ISA
1 Taxable

2 Peer to Peer

So only really six, and the middle three are with the same place so it makes accessing them easier (one login).

Between the two of us: 8, spread across 4 firms.

It really doesn't matter as it's all buy and forget...

same here with one bank and login. Would be nice if all accounts were combined to show complete picture of gains/losses and asset allocation.

For just me on my onsies:10 investment accounts. This does not include a variety of checking/savings/etc accounts. And I haven't even hit the balance to turn my HSA into an investment account!

I really should look at consolidating the stuff that makes sense to roll over... (ie not the 457! but I do have a rollover IRA and simple IRA that could become one, united in Vanguard, etc etc).
