Title: How are your portfolios doing YTD?
Post by: Frugalman19 on December 10, 2015, 07:37:36 AM
This year has been very strange, with the plunge in oil, the mini correction, and international and EM doing poorly, my portfolio is lightly flat to down for the year. Just wanted to see how everyone else is doing?

Onward and upward, time to tax loss harvest and move on.

I think DCA has probably worked to my advantage, but I'm only up about 1% for the year. This includes some losses from rebalancing to align my AA in more mustachian ways.

Down 3.6% YTD total return, including brokerage fees. I put a big chunk into individual dividend paying equities just in the last two months, so total return reflects the brokerage fees I otherwise wouldn't have paid and the recent oil decline.

These holdings are intended to be generational, so I'm not worried about a small short term decline.

According to Personal Capital, my You Index for 344 days is -1.21% but when I check my 344 day portfolio performance it's +2.95%. I don't get the difference between the two.

Survey Said:  4.68%

Considering the SP500 is up +0.03% YTD and the DJIA down -1.11% YTD, I'll take a 5-6% spread over the market any and every year.  Hoorah!

YTD as of Nov 30 my returns are about 12% in RRSP account and down 2% in TFSA.

RRSP have done well because its 100% invested in US Index fund and the CAD/USD exchange rate has dropped significantly boosting the return results in CAD.

TFSA is down because it's invested in Canadian stocks and our stock market got hit hard by the oil crash and housing bubble concerns. By the end of December I will be down even more as most of my stocks have dropped in December.

As of yesterday my total portfolio is down 0.6%.  Give or take what happens in the next two weeks I'd say I stayed flat for the year. My son's 529 is up almost 13% this year.  My TSP is up 3.4%, but that's split 50/50 bonds and stocks.  The rest is pulled down by my VTSAX and VTIAX holdings.

My only actively managed portfolio is up 1.1% this year, compared to my reference index portfolio, which is down 6.3%.

This is my tfsa, which only consists of Canadian equities.

-3.63% which at my NW is about 5 months of living expenses.

NW is up by ~68% despite that, thanks to a high savings rate and healthy income.

Saved 3 years of living expenses this year =D

.6% in equities (counting fees), but prepayment of my mortgage (which I treat like a bond) has earned me nearly 3%, so I'm somewhere around 3.6% for the year.

I took a sound beating from the "Don't Prepay Your Mortgage, Fool" police at the beginning of 2015, but now I'm the one who's grinning.

Unless they're both Canadian Equity, the comparison is irrelevant.  Don't think that because it's managed it did better.  Unless you're 100% Canadian Equity, then I'm interested...

What is in them that makes such a difference?  My bonds are doing better than my index stocks, which would be true whether they were actively managed or not.  How much are you paying for the management?

Roughly 100$ on commission.

I personally pick the stocks in my tfsa with a value investing approach. Everything else is in index Funds. I'll see how it goes, but I'm willing to go back to indexing if I start to lose to my benchmark.

In Canadian dollars I'm +9% YTD, but only because my currency has been tanking this year. I'm invested 50% US stocks, 20% international, and 30% Canadian stock/bond mix.

I forgot Disney +17.4%
And Reality Income +5.85%
I made a mess this year with too many accounts and trading. It will be much cleaner next year. It will be much easier to give one number.

Also Canadian, up about 8%.  Thank you crappy Canadian dollar (I guess?).

Somewhere between -2% and +2%, so basically a wash. I have about 50k profit I'll be able to invest in the next month or two so hoping the market stays low for a bit.

Whew, this makes me feel better. I know the rational data on index investing, and "I bought all my shit on sale", but I only started in July and I still check my accounts too often only to see that I'm not making anything, only deposits. I know I shouldn't check so often, but I'm still steadily increasing the percentage of my income, so it's not really causing any stress, I was just starting to think that the funds I picked out of my 457 were crap.

I am doing fairly well this year because a large part of my investments are US equities and the Canadian dollar is weak. I am fairly early in the accumulation phase so I don't mind the discounted stock.

It's really sad when you make a deposit and the new value, AFTER deposit is less than it was just a month or 2 ago.  That's when you have to remind yourself that it's a good time to be buying...

Pretty much flat YTD.  That's OK, reinvesting dividends and distributions all the way...

Pretty poopy.  My 401K with my current employer is at -1.4%.  I think my other vanguard accounts are worse than that.  I mostly look at total NW, and since I'm contributing it masks the crappy performance.  Oh well, I suppose there is nothing to do but keep plugging away...

Of course they're both Canadian equities. Why would I choose a different index to what I'm investing in? Again, this is my personal stock picking and not a managed fund.

My tax-differed accounts are up more than 10% even after correcting for monthly contributions (how did that happen?). My taxable account has a legacy of way too many oil stocks from when I first started investing in the stock market and are at -9.7% for the year. My tax differed accounts are entirely in index funds and are doing much better.

My RRSP is up 8.94% YTD, but thats because I directed my mid year bonus in, which was the majority of the value, in july.
My TFSA is up like 1%, (canadian equities really screwed me).
