How are REITs in VTSAX?
« on: April 14, 2019, 05:23:41 PM »
I've been reading some MMM threads in this forum about VGSLX vs. VTSAX.  Many comment that VTSAX is a wiser investment with the lower expense (.04) and that it has REITs in it anyway.  I don't get that?  When I look under the hood of VTSAX on morningstar, I don't see any REITs listed in it.  Could someone help educate me on this?

Thanks so much.

It looks like on their fund info page they lumped it in with financial at 19%
You can see it split up in their fund compare page with financials at 14.3% and real estate at 3.8%.

Whoever suggested 100% VGSLX is probably rather out of touch with data on stock market history.  Most people who "tilt" to 20% real estate owe that idea thanks to David Swensen, who managed Yale's Endowment to remarkable performance numbers.  Besides that, I mostly hear no special allocation to real estate stocks - never 100%.

Morningstar data reinforces @Andy R 's point that VTSAX holds just under 4% in Real Estate:

I like REIT only because I am in real-estate.  Because of that VGSLX is a part of my portfolio (~3.5%).  The monthly dividends are nice but I think VTSAX has performed better.  No worries...  Just the risk and reward that I am willing to take.

From the link above VTSAX has ~4% REIT. Why do you hold a separate VGSLX at ~3.5%? Wouldn't you be better off holding just VTSAX to get your REIT exposure? Or do you have ~3.5% VGSLX on top of the 4% from VTSAX?

To be honest, the reason I hold VGSLX is because before reading about the Vanguard Total Stock & Total Bond I was drawn to ONLY REIT.  I once thought I would just live off the dividends of REIT funds.  The reason that it is still one of the three that I hold is it is nostalgic.

Closer look at my Vanguard IRA:

VTSAX – $146.4k (T.Stocks)
VBTLX – $47.7k (T.Bonds)
VGSLX – $7.4k (REIT)
