gnucash and tracking bond ‘fund’ price
« on: February 01, 2022, 11:21:22 AM »
I started using gnucash this year to track my finances.  Aim to get away from personal capital etc.  I’ve successfully managed to set it up to track the price of funds such as VINIX (one of my T Rowe Price 401(k) funds) by checking in yahoo on a weekly basis.  I can’t however get it to track the price of bond funds such as PRCPB.

Can anyone advise?

Imho, you can just update the balance manually every month or even every 3 months.
It's all paper gains/losses until you sell, anyway.

PTF, mainly.  I use gnucash to track expenses (and really like it) but I haven't bothered to track my assets with it.  One of these days, though, I'd like to give it a try.

I've used it for a couple of years now just using manual updates. Assuming that bond prices are updated in a similar way as stocks/mutual funds, it's tools>price database>select>add>ok

The relevant help page is here: https://code.gnucash.org/docs/C/gnucash-guide/invest-stockprice1.html

You are typically only able to track the price of exchange traded instruments in these sort of apps, ie individual securities and ETFs. So use something with a ticker symbol like TLT or EDV for bond prices.
