Global ETFs for European investors
« on: April 09, 2016, 02:03:57 PM »
I spent some hours researching various global ETFs domiciled in Europe, and I thought my findings might be to interest to others as well. Especially surprising to me was the new low cost ETFs from Deutsche Bank (db x-trackers).

Below is the ETFs with the lowest TERs that uses physical replication and are listed on Deutsche Börse (Xetra), Euronext Amsterdam, London Stock Exchange, and/or SIX Swiss Exchange. I also attached the list of global ETFs I found in my research (including ETFs with synthetic replication).

Developed and emerging markets
Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF0.25%
SPDR MSCI ACWI UCITS ETF0.40%

Developed markets
Vanguard FTSE Developed World UCITS ETF0.18%
db x-trackers MSCI World Index UCITS ETF0.19%
iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF0.20%

Emerging markets
Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets UCITS ETF0.25%
UBS ETF MSCI Emerging Markets UCITS ETF0.45%
HSBC MSCI Emerging Markets UCITS ETF*0.40%
SPDR MSCI Emerging Markets UCITS ETF*0.42%
* This ETF holds only 75% of the companies in the index

Ishares tracks a different index to vanguard all world.  Ishares all world does not include emerging markets.

I'm going to try to update the list with number of stocks. Also I got the wrong index for emerging markets from MSCI. Thought it was a bit strange that it was only three ETFs available for such a popular market.

Just making sure you saw all of these:

https://www.vanguard.nl/documents/etf-product-range.pdf

I have read it several times and I don't think I missed any relevant ETF.

The reason for my research was to find a replacement for Vanguard FTSE All-World, which means one ETF or a combination ETFs that follow passively follows a market-capitalisation-weighted index of common stocks of large and mid cap companies in developed and emerging countries. That excludes the ETFs that follow a non-global region, specific sector and/or a specific investment strategy (high-dividend, value stock, active management).

Ishares tracks a different index to vanguard all world.  Ishares all world does not include emerging markets.

Which ETF from iShares are you talking about? There are iShares Core MSCI World and iShares MSCI ACWI. The latter follows MSCI All Country World Index which includes both developed and emerging markets just as FTSE All-World Index.

I know it's not global, but VEUR is pretty good too.
You can buy it in euros in Amsterdam, it's vanguard's Europe ETF and has a ter of 0.12%

Also Shiller PE on European stocks is around 15, so it's not a bad time to go euro now.

I have updated the first post with the right index for emerging markets and the number of stocks each index and ETF hold. Also the table for developed market has changed slightly to exclude ETFs that uses swaps.
