Vanguard in Canada
« on: February 16, 2017, 11:09:29 PM »
Hello all

I'm really trying to find some quality index funds or ETFs to buy in my registered RRSP account. I have read lot about Vanguard funds here and became interested in them, but In order to avoid tax complications, should I buy only the Canadian offerings? or because my focus is an RRSP registered account, I can go with US Vanguard like VTI, etc and be safe of tax withholdings...?

What is your advice for a balanced approach?  is VAB + VCN + VXC a good combo? or a VCN + VFV + VIU + VEE?

I also found this couch potato plan VCN + XUS + XEF + XEC which includes I-shares...

I have learned a lot through this forum since a week ago just by reading the threads but have a long way to go to learn.....I have 15 years to retirement and will be investing average 10k-15k a year starting right now....already have a little bit invested in mutual funds and stocks...

Lots of great info here. Check out his whole site to learn a lot about indexing at low cost in Canada.

The Canadian Couch Potato also recently started a podcast. I think he's putting forth some very well articulated arguments for indexing. Most people around here may already be on that train, but I've already pointed friends and family to his show to try to help them on the "path to enlightenment".

My portfolio is:

- VUN 50%
- VCN 30%
- VDU 10%
- VEE 10%

I hold no bonds as I have no need for them at this time. When I am ready to FIRE I'll swap stocks for ~5yrs spending of bonds to get me through the sequence of returns risk period.

My GF has opted for a simpler portfolio:

- VXC 70%
- VCN 30%

She has a generous pension coming to her that will cover her minimal spending needs so she is skipping bonds as well.

As long as you choose a diversified set of funds with low fees you'll do fine.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
