Vanguard investing problem
« on: January 24, 2016, 02:15:56 AM »
Hi guys,

Just needed some insight onto an issue I've encountered. I placed a $16,000 worth of VTSAX on Vanguard several days ago, to be debited from my bank account. Turns out I had miscalculated my debits and was a bit short, so the Vanguard debit from my bank account overdrew my account, but still purchased the VTSAX shares at a very low price. I deposited money into my bank checking account to cover the overdraw. The next day, (Jan 21) the 16,000 was returned to my bank account, but strangely I didn't get any messages on my vanguard account and the balance still reflects the recently added amount. How should I handle this situation? Would I be able to somehow keep the shares that were bought at the low price by somehow transferring Vanguard the money back?

Thanks for any insight!

Call Vanguard.  Since there is a two to three day lag when transferring money what probably happened is that your bank rejected the transfer but Vanguard hasn't got the reject back yet. So the purchase will likely be reversed.

It would be prudent to call them just to let them know what happened.

And no more estimating bank balances!  Excel, YNAB, MINT, use something, and KNOW what you have in your account at any time.
