Vanguard Nonexistant? (poss Free-Riding)
« on: February 17, 2017, 08:07:52 AM »
I got an email this morning saying my vanguard account has been restricted and I need to either call them or log in and read the message that has been sent to me.

I've tried to do so, but the vanguard website is no longer working for me. I went to a different computer and managed to get the website to work but when I log in it just gives me a list of numbers to call since my account information is unavailable. I've called each number and ones I've googled but I cannot get through to anyone (which is unusual, because I have done so in the past).

I think what may have happened after googling is I have committed "free-riding".

I've been investing in VTI until yesterday when I finally had enough to put money into VTSMX. My monthly auto-deposit into my money market account was yesterday, and I also put in extra money to fund the $3,000 minimum to get into VTSMX.

So I sold my holdings in VTI and then purchased VTSMX with everything in my money market account. Vanguard showed that the money was available to trade so I thought that would be ok.

But after googling what may have happened, I think this is what happened. I cannot find out for sure though because apparently, vanguard has entirely locked me out of my account and I can't even get into my account on the website (most of the time some kind of internal error comes up, or if i manage to get in it says i need to call them).

I've been trying to reach them for the past 45 minutes and I'm getting nothing but odd rings/buzzes on the phone and it usually just drops my call.

Can anyone confirm that this is probably what has happened? Am I really locked out for 90 days? The money may not have been "posted" in the money market account yet, but Vanguard's website said the money was available to trade so I went ahead and purchased VTSMX. Regardless, the money I'm sure made it in today. Am I really locked out for 90 days? I know its an SEC thing, but I read something about good faith. The money did show up. I just apparently screwed up purchasing/selling too much/too fast.

I could reach the Vanguard site this morning, but I got a 404 error message every time I tried to log in. Seems ok now, though.

No, not a scam. The email was legit. From Vanguard.

Louisville, this is what I was seeing. I can get in now. Just coincidence then. Thanks!

Just to inform who may be interested. It was free-riding.
