Moving Money From Advisor - Need Advice
« on: November 07, 2016, 07:03:17 AM »
Hi Everyone,

After reading through the MMM articles and threads on the forum, I've decided I am going to move my Roth IRA from an advisor I've been with for many years and move it to index funds, probably with Vanguard.  I have approximately $250,000 in the Roth.  I would like to invest mainly stocks and in some bonds for security.  What funds would you recommend to invest in at Vanguard?  I see a lot of info about the total stock market fund and ETFs.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

+1 to AdrianC's link.  If you want to keep it really simple for now, VWINX and VWELX are also very nice one-stop-shops at Vanguard.

For your equity allocation, invest in 80% VTSAX and 20% VTIAX. This gives the least volatility historically for US / international mix.

If you insist on bonds, I'd add a component of VSCSX (short-term bond fund... which are the least volatile of bonds). Bonds will give you the chance of less dips from year to year... but stocks will win out in the long-term.... which is what you should be thinking about. So I'd really recommend 100% stocks.

Whatever you choose though, you're gonna do so much better than with an advisor, so it's all good!!!

More info bout the graph and this analysis can be found in the link in my signature.

Happy Savings!
