I'm 100% low-cost, globally diversified index funds.

If you like the pride with owning one stock, you should be beaming when owning the total market!

This is an interesting minor example of how human psychological and behavioral factors can interfere with rational investing.
Hand-picking individual stocks because you believe you can beat the market? Chances are you're wrong, but at least that makes theoretical sense.
Hand-picking individual stocks because it increases your pride of ownership? That's just bonkers. It's your human monkey brain messing with you. It's not like you're going to become more impressive at cocktail parties when you tell people that you directly own 0.000001% of Apple instead of the 0.0000001% you would indirectly own if you indexed.

About 1/3 of my IRA is in HASI, bought right after its IPO - up 80% in 2 years and still yielding 5%. I'll keep it forever unless the management tanks and growth stops. I also have lesser positions in PEGI and other renewable yieldcos that I will probably keep in perpetuity, even increase. Investing in that sector is a personal priority of mine that I'm willing to accept *may* result in market-lagging returns. (So far it hasn't, overall).
Most of the rest are large-cap dividend stocks that I bought 1-2 years ago due to anxiety about market overshoot, but I am planning to gradually shift those funds back to whole indices over time. Most future contributions will go there too.

Come on, be reasonable. Some of us with deeper wallets could own at least 0.00001% of Apple. Or maybe even 0.000002%.
