Need help selecting 401k investments
« on: February 27, 2019, 05:23:38 PM »
Hi everyone, I joined a new company and it turns out they don't really have many Vanguard funds so I'm really at a loss of what investments I should pick.

At my last company I had: Vanguard Institutional Total International Stocks (VTSNX) and Vanguard Institutional 500 Index Trust.

My 401k matches 100% up to 6% and below are the funds available. Any suggestions? Should I just pick a target date fund (is Blackrock comparable to Vanguard target date)?

BLKRK EQUITY INDEX
DODGE & COX STOCK (DODGX)
FID CONTRAFUND (FCNTX)
FID OTC PORTFOLIO (FOCPX)
BR MID CAP EQ IDX R
FID LOW PRICED STK (FLPSX)
MM SEL MID CAP GR I (MEFZX)
FID SMALL CAP VALUE (FCPVX)
J H VENTURE N (JVTNX)
BR MSCI ACWI EX US R
OPPENHEIMER GLOBAL I (OGLIX)
VANG INTL GROWTH ADM (VWILX)
BLKRK R2000 IDX R
WT BR LIFEPATH 2020
WT BR LIFEPATH 2025
WT BR LIFEPATH 2030
WT BR LIFEPATH 2035
WT BR LIFEPATH 2040
WT BR LIFEPATH 2045
WT BR LIFEPATH 2050
WT BR LIFEPATH 2055
WT BR LIFEPATH 2060
WT BR LIFEPATH RET
BR US DEBT INDEX
DODGE & COX INCOME (DODIX)
PIM HIGH YIELD INST (PHIYX)
VANG INFL PROT ADM (VAIPX)

You'll need to see what are the expense ratios for these various funds. Blackrock, like most investment firms, charge significantly higher fees than Vanguard. The only exception I found was the Blackrock equity index that has a 0.02% expense ratio. (I believe, you didn't provide a ticker symbol, but this seems to be their prospectus: https://www.tiaa.org/public/pdf/ffs/09257F792.pdf).

That's probably your best bet for an equity index fund. Use VAIPX for your bond allocation since it has the lowest fees (0.10%)

I would put 90% of your money into the appropriate-age target date fund, and 10% of your money into the "Fidelity Small Cap Value" option.

More information on this strategy available here: https://paulmerriman.com/2-funds-for-life/

Thanks for suggestions so far! Cant seem to paste a table into the reply box so this is the best I can do below. The expense ratios are a lot higher than I am used to at my old company. Is it still worth maxing out my 401k?

Wondering if the following three would be a reasonable selection? And if so, is the mix be appropriate?

1 - 30% (BLKRK EQUITY INDEX   Stock Investments   Large Cap   0.02%)
2 - 40% (BR MID CAP EQ IDX R   Stock Investments   Mid-Cap   0.05%)
3 - 30% (BR MSCI ACWI EX US R   Stock Investments   International   0.09%)

Your mix is fine. There's a lot of statistical work that says 70-30 Int'l is really not that different from 60-40 or 50-50.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
