Chart of Bull and Bear Markets
« on: August 19, 2017, 10:35:55 AM »
I found this is fun to look at if people are getting too worried about the length of the current run.

We're already higher than four of them.

We're already higher than four of them.

And lower than 4 of them.  So I guess we have a 50% chance of continuing to go up up up right?  Haha

This was previously posted in one of the many other threads concerning market timing, but I'm glad it was posted again here. It's less useful for showing where our current bull run is relative to other bull markets than it is for illustrating just how much of the past ~90 years have been part of a bull market.

It ain't worth sweating those little bear interludes.

It is so misleading when a "bear market" is defined as a 20% drop from the previous high and a "bull market" is defined as everything else.

Below is the conclusion from an analyst report I saw recently, which dived into the reasons why the last two recessions occurred, what investments got hurt and what the next bear market might look like.  I find this stuff entertaining, an educated guess at best, however the quote is sage advice.

"Other than sufficient diversification, the simplest solution for weathering the coming storm is behavioral, and that is for investors to save more, thereby reducing the impact of a bear market, whatever its ferocity, on their portfolios.  This is easier said than done, especially in a rising market when net worth seems to grow monthly as if by magic.  Yet, in the long run, it will prove to be the most effective insurance against portfolio losses of any depth or duration. I like the chart, but the percentages can be very misleading. For example, after a 42.6% loss (roughly half), a gain of > 800% isn't so impressive as it sounds. The first doubling of stock prices is basically just offsetting the previous loss.

Consider this: When a stock falls 50%, it has to rise 100% to only recover.
