I just got off the phone with a not well trained Flagship representative from Vanguard. She couldn't clearly and convincingly answer my question, so now I'm putting it to you. If I were to purchase an INDIVIDUAL dividend paying stock, e.g., P&G, do you know if there's anything special I need to do (forms to fill out, etc.) in order to have those dividends reinvested within my Vanguard brokerage account?

Anyone out there DOING this with individual stocks through Vanguard.

I don't own individual stocks and am not about to. Just planning for the next bargain basement sale, and hoping it's a couple of years off.

Thanks!

I don't have the answer, but I'm an interested observer. In June I purchased a few dividend paying stocks through Vanguard and clicked the option for dividend re-investing. I'm hoping they go straight in without any transaction costs, but I haven't received any dividends yet. If there are any transaction costs I will have them go to the money market account and await the next stock that's on sale that I want to add to the portfolio.

I just recently opened my Vanguard account and transferred some holding into my brokerage account which includes some shares of CenturyLink.  My dividend payment for this past quarter was reinvested automatically to buy more shares.  I believe reinvestment of dividends was the default selection when I established my account.

Editted to add that I didn't notice any transaction fees for the reinvestment and the total dividend amount was used so fractional shares are shown purchased.

Observationally, non-Vanguard ETFs held with dividend reinvestment in a Vanguard account reinvest without transaction fees.

While I haven't done it with individual stocks, there's no reason to believe they would be different.
