Betterment Account Suspended?!?!
« on: January 05, 2015, 06:45:08 PM »
Hi all.  First post here but wish it was a better topic.

Just opened an account with Betterment last week to house some of my Cash Stash.  I was able to open the account, successfully link my bank account, make two transactions before getting an e-mail today (4 minutes before the customer service office closed) telling me they were unable to verify my SSN by "checking against public consumer records" and they were suspending my account.

They want to verify my SSN over the phone (which stands my hair up on end) and may need me to send additional documentation.

I figured if I was able to deposit funds into the account, all was well....which is why I suspect this is a phishing attempt.

Anybody else run into this with Betterment?

Thanks!

Kwill

Could you try looking at the Betterment website for a phone number and calling them there to find out more about the email? Find the website via Google or use whatever you know to be the actual company address. I would not use any email address or phone number or URL provided within a strange email like that.

That happened to a friend of mine. Logging in said the account was suspended and you had to call them to verify your SSN. She never bothered to call though because she's not ready to start investing yet.

Yeah, this happened to me as well.... but it happened before I could fund my account.

I recently moved and all my utilities are included in my rent so there aren't any real public records of me... so... to a surprisingly large number of companies, I don't exist.

I also tried getting a credit score and couldn't last month... which is remotely concerning since I do have an active credit card... I should look into that.
