Bear market -> time to go heavy in VTSAX?
« on: December 25, 2018, 06:22:47 AM »
Happy holiday all,

We've had an ugly year end with the major stock markets moving into bear territory.

If you had a spare $50k to invest is now the time to go all in on VTSAX?

I assume JL Collins would say that with that mindset you probably should not be investing, but we all have our investing flaws.

The big question is how much further the market will go down.

You’re asking a question no one can answer, but nevertheless, buying when stocks are falling is the best thing you can do so I commend you for being fearless. You’ll have to pick the day, or pick the n-days to DCA it in. I regularly invest weekly to remove my emotions, but opportunities like this don’t happen all the time so I will be buying more as it falls. Where’s the bottom? Don’t know. Just be thankful for the gift.

First paycheck of the year is January 2, so a chunk goes in then.

I'm doubling my monthly VTSAX investment beginning on Jan 2. Not going to try to time anything, I always lose when I attempt to time.

Your missing the point. You never lose going hard into VTSAX. Always and forever.

Right. I realize that VTSAX is a winning fund. But just 3 weeks ago, I was holding about $15K cash from a rollover IRA and decided to "time" my investment by dropping it all in when the market seemed to be dipping. But I need to think of that less as me trying to time things and more just as a good investment no matter what.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
