Title: Bay Area Mustachians - Do you think A/C is worth the cost?
Post by: wildbeast on May 31, 2017, 01:36:42 PM
A current thread in one of the other sections has me pondering whether my fellow Bay Areaians think installing AC is worth it .

What say ye?

Care to be more specific? Some areas are hotter than others. We're in the East Bay and we frequently get a cooling evening fog, especially when it's HOT inland. Many years we don't use our A/C at all, but when we need it, we need it, lol! Typically no more than one week a summer, max. It came with the house, though so we're happy to have it.

I had a little condo in Orinda without A/C and it was fine, but I was on the top floor and could leave windows open at night.

I used to live quite comfortably in LA with no A/C, because I was just across the Santa Monica border and enjoyed cooling ocean breezes.

I guess my answer is "It depends."

I'm in San Jose. We don't have it and don't plan to install it. We make a point of opening windows in the morning to let the cool night air in, and keeping curtains closed during the day, etc., to keep the house relatively cool, and that's usually fine. There are two or three weeks, spread out over the summer, when it would be realy nice to have AC, but that doesn't justify the expense, for me.

How hot is it where you are? Do you want to air-condition the whole house all summer long, or would just one or two rooms (say, bedroom and office) work for you?

I'm in North Marin. I have it, but seldom use it. If I lived in Concord or Livermore, I would definitely have A/C.

Fremont here. No need of A/C. Let the air in in the morning all the way till 2PM. Then close the heck out of the curtains. Open everything again after sunset for another hour for night breeze.
