Title: anyone know anything about NEA DirectInvest 403b?
Post by: Dagmar on October 01, 2016, 03:04:36 PM
I've been researching 403b options (my husband is a teacher), and I came across a forum post that mentioned the possibility of using the NEA DirectInvest plan, offered through Security Benefit for the NEA Retirement Program.  I don't even know if this an option for my husband -- he's an NEA member I guess, but we haven't talked to anyone at his district about it yet.  I just wondered if any other teachers out there have used it and what they think.

It's a 403b custodial account.  The website refers to it as "an option for the do-it-yourself investor," which I hope means avoiding advisor fees.  They appear to have Vanguard funds; here's the list I found on their website:

Vanguard 500 Index
Vanguard Total Stock Market Index
Vanguard Growth Index
Vanguard Mid Cap Index
Vanguard Small Cap Index
Vanguard REIT Index
Vanguard Total International Stock Index
Vanguard Intermediate Term Bond Index

...as well as 20 other non-Vanguard funds.  They listed them in a table, and I couldn't tell if you could invest in whichever ones you wanted or how that works (still pretty new to all of this).  It says there is a $35 per year administrative fee for accounts under $50,000.  I attached the PDF of info in case anyone is interested, and the website is: http://www.nearetirementprogram.com/nea-directinvest

Just curious if others have used it, and what they think!  We're looking for an alternative to my husband's crappy AXA account and trying to gather all of the options.
