« on: March 24, 2020, 10:57:02 AM »
Hi All,

What is your opinion of the ticker "VOO" vanguard 500 etf vs other stock funds?

Thanks in advance for any input.

My opinion is that it's approximately 80% as good as a total US market index tracker as VTI, which is to say that my preference would be to invest in VTI.

If you feel strongly about Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO), buy it.  The top 500 companies in the U.S. are far larger than companies in the rest of the market - as terran said, they make up 80% of the stock market.  You could instead buy either VTI (Vanguard) or ITOT (iShares) and capture the entire stock market for a low fee (~3700 stocks, 0.03% expense ratio).

The key thing is what makes you start investing.  I would prefer VTI, but if buying VOO makes you start investing, that's the better choice for you.

A good, cheap ETF (or index fund version) that is going to provide market returns for the S&P 500 less the measly expense ratio.

Seriously, don't overthink it. Buy that or VTI and move on to more productive (or fun) activities.
