401k questions
« on: February 23, 2015, 08:47:02 AM »
Thanks in advance for everybodys help.
The only vanguard funds that I have access to through my company 401k is the:
VIFSX: Vanguard 500 index signal
VSISX: Vanguard small cap index signal

My current allocation in my 401k is 90% in the VSISX and 10% in the VIFSX.
I am 30 years old and right now plan on retiring around 60.
What percentage should I have or am I doing it right? THANKS!

I would recommend you flip these allocations. You've got 90% in small caps and 10% in large caps (S&P)! That is incredibly risky, even riskier than the 100% stocks allocation that some people discuss doing (that 100% stocks usually means 100% VTSAX, which is mostly large caps, and some medium and small caps).

And don't limit yourself to Vanguard index funds in a 401k. List out all index funds and their expense ratios and pick from those.

Go ahead and list out all of your cheaper funds. It would be nice to at least include an international index fund.

If you are comfortable with 90% small cap, then by all means keep it. 90/10 small/large is a completely valid allocation (if you can handle the slightly increased volatility).

I would, however, change your allocation once you are FIRE.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
