401K Moving to Principal Funds - Help me with allocation!
« on: May 29, 2014, 03:14:05 PM »
My husband's 401K is moving from American Funds to Principal Funds starting July 1. Help me choose his allocation! Here's a link to their options:

https://www.principalfunds.com/investor/forms/prospectuses.htm

We are 30 years old, okay with some risk, and there's about $30K in the account.

Minimize fees and expense ratios.

Go with the Asset Allocation that works for you and lets you sleep at night, AKA not panicking if shit hits the fan and markets tumble.

Get an investment policy statement.

Generally stick with index funds as your foundation for investing.

No one can tell you what to choose. That is your husbands choice primarily.

Hey credaholic,

My 401k is also through principal - not a lot of great options from what I found.  I ended up putting everything into the 500 S&P Index Fund b/c the ER is the lowest by a long shot.  Good luck!

See if the company will move to Vanguard instead.

Yeah, I'm not overly thrilled. We've done great with American Funds, his company is making a big deal about how people weren't  satisfied, and Principal has more options and financial planning extras, etc. To be honest, I don't think many of the people in my husband's company are very involved in their 401Ks, so I'm doubtful about their reasons for switching. I'm sure they're getting some kind of kick back or deal to switch.

Theoretically yes, but he leaves these decisions squarely on my shoulders, so any extra advice I can get helps me feel not so alone in the decision making!

Thanks erae.
