Title: 401k allocation help please
Post by: augustwest on March 19, 2019, 12:18:53 PM
hi all-

newbie here but have been reading this forum for months now.   really enjoy the conversation.

my company just started offering some better choices in 401k.  I previously had SOME vanguard choices but those just became better.    I have roughly 10-15% bonds in my roth/ira so I'm not sure i need bonds in 401k unless you guys and gals have other thoughts.

i'm 40 years old, plan to work for at least another 20 years if not more. I max out my ira/roth, have a smaller taxable account at vanguard all in VTSAX, emergency fund good to go.

i'm at 10% in my 401k working towards maxing it out.   company matches 4%.   this is through Merrill Lynch.

Stock choices:
VEXAX
VFWAX
VINIX

Bond choices:
VBTLX

Target Retirement choices:
2040
2045
2050
2055

I was thinking

VINIX - 70%
VFWAX - 15%
VEXAX - 15%

I know S&P has plenty of foreign revenue too but wanted some help/advice on what to do.

thoughts?

thanks in advance!

My thoughts would be to look at all of your accounts as one combined portfolio, and make sure your asset allocation is where you want it.

It looks like a your 70% VINIX and 15% VEXAX gives you roughly total US market, so that looks fine. If 15% international and however much in bonds in your other accounts gives you your desired asset allocation, looks good to me.
