[CANADA] What would be your mix of Canadian Vanguard funds
« on: September 19, 2017, 03:01:31 PM »
I am looking for some throught process help.

I need to go ahead and put some of my wifes money into some index funds (~25K) and I am having trouble determining what mix of Vanguard funds I should pick up for her
So here is the question...

What would be your personal preference for investing 25K into the Canadian Vanguard funds and Why?
- I am just as interested in your reasoning as your end result, so I can evaluate my own thought process.

Thanks in advance.

What is your investment account? TFSA, Unregistered, RRSP?

Also, what is her income bracket.

All of these are important before choosing the best type of investment.

After understanding the full Bogleheads getting started, I followed ccp advice on what to buy.  Read both of these extensively to know what you're buying and why.  Everyone has different goals.

Canadian couch potato is a great start, but note he seems to change which etfs he tracks every year. It would be nice if he kept tracking each allocation he's ever shown.

Whatever allocation you go with stick with it.

We all have different goals, for instance I'll be FI between 45-50 (5 to 10 years)and I have a nice pension coming to me so I am 100% equities. I chose VXC and VCN only to keep things simple. I'm 85% VXC and 15% VCN, I find home bias pretty high in many Canadian suggested portfolios. However now the rising CDN dollar is hurting me somewhat.

CCP updates his recommendations every few years. I follow his previous allocation (VXC, VCN, VAB).

This is what I am doing 60/30/10 aggressive mix in my RRSP, I don't know why but for some reason I went 50/25/25 in my TFSA

If you want to experiment with different Canadian asset allocations, you might try this:

https://portfoliocharts.com/calculators/

Just select Canada from the country dropdown in each calculator and it converts everything to Canadian stocks, bonds, currency, and inflation.

All of these are important before choosing the best type of investment.

TFSA primarily, she is approx. 62K per year, less approx. 10-15K RRSP
Combined family income is 125K, so wont be any spousal RRSP contributions.

I, too, go with CCP model portfolio.

re: Him changing it regularly, he notes that the newest model would generally be implemented only by new people coming in. Those of us with established portfolios would likely stay in what we we're in. i.e., When he presents something new, he's not suggesting or proposing we change an established one, as it's not necessary. I can't think of any funds he's retracted his recommendation of.

62K is pretty close to even with doing RRSP or TFSA.

RRSP gets you a tax credit, but TFSA won't be taxed. If you have a long enough time-frame / low RRSP account, I'd fill that one up first, then TFSA, but it's a very small gain.
