Where to live in terms of distance from work.
« on: October 01, 2018, 07:47:55 AM »
Live 45 miles away 1 to 1.5 hour commute (Rent $1484)
Or live within 2 miles of work and pay Rent ($2100 +)

We could drop down to one car.

Any thoughts ?

Live closer. Review this: http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/10/06/the-true-cost-of-commuting/

Do some math on time saved plus cost of gas and running two vehicles vs. one.

Is $600/month (post tax) worth up to 60 hours of additional work time? (Assuming the 1.5hrs each way, 5 days per week. Counting it as work because you wouldn't be making that drive without work). If you're in dire enough financial straits right now, the answer *may* be yes, but in most cases... no. Especially depending on what you would do with that 60 extra hours per month. Healthy hobby? More from scratch cooking? Side hustle?

Definitely +1 the "true cost of commuting" article.

I would t live 1.5 hours from work if the rent were free. Definitely live closer and enjoy better health and quality of life. Use the time not in the car to save money by cooking for yourself or all manner of other activities you would otherwise be tempted to outsource.

We just made the choice between 1.5 hours per day and biking. It has made an enormous difference in our quality of life.

We also made the choice to have a roommate to defer the costs, but that was so that we could keep the boat we had been living on.

Does it have to be so binary?

Can you find anything else 2-5 miles from work for ~$1800?
