Where to live distance from work?
« on: October 01, 2018, 07:45:04 AM »
Live 45 miles from work with 1-1.5 commute (rent $1600)
Or live within 4 miles from work bike commute (rent $2300)

It is expense to live near my work!

That seems like an obvious choice to me: live near work.

Driving 90 miles round trip each workday will result in over 20,000 miles of extra driving a year. Even with conservative assumptions for the cost of driving, this will eat up the savings of the cheaper rent (in reality it may very well cost you more).

And that's without factoring the value of your time, and the health value of biking 8 miles a day. Assuming it took you half an hour to bike to work, it sounds like you would gain an hour of free time each workday, which is nearly 10 days of time each year.

Yes, that particular example is an absolute no-brainer.  Live near work.  An hour each way commute will cost at least the $700/mo difference all-in, plus your time and the stress of commuting.

Longer commutes *can* sometimes makes sense in edge cases or if you have special preferences/requirements, but this is not one of them.

Live near work. For many years, I had a 3-hour round trip commute into Manhattan. Long commutes suck the life right out of you.
