Suggestions wanted for a small decorative garden
« on: June 11, 2020, 10:46:52 AM »
Hey, new subforum! This is actually perfect for me, I'm a newbie at gardening and was hoping to get some suggestions.

I live on the second floor of a two-story building. My downstairs neighbor and I share a front door with a small concrete patio, and next to the patio is a space set aside for landscaping. It's a small plot, maybe eight or nine feet on a side, and kind of an awkward triangular shape.

My neighbor planted rose bushes years ago, but she no longer has the energy to maintain them, and they're getting wild and bushy and encroaching on the patio. She gave me permission to do what I want with the space, and I'd like to tidy it up and put in some new plants.

The plot is on the north side of the building, so whatever I plant would have to be OK with partial shade, and I live in the northeast U.S., so it would have to be suited for a four-season climate. I'd prefer perennials just because replanting every year sounds like a pain.

I was thinking of putting in some ferns and some pollinator-friendly native flowers, but I'm open to suggestions. Does anyone have recommendations for species that look pretty and would be well-suited to the space?

(edit: clarified the plot is 8-9 feet on a side, not 8-9 feet total)

Can you give us information on soil type and drainage?

I checked a soil survey map, and it says my area is on sandy loam. I haven't dug down into it yet, but the rose bushes seem happy and are blooming abundantly, so I'm guessing it's well-drained.

I love the idea of pollinator friendly flowers. Lavender is one that is Perennial and is adored by bees and butterflies. It’s also nice herb!

Lavender, that's a good one! I also like lemon balm.

Ohh, yes! And then when it’s time to prune, a real shame about that tea you have to make!

My herb garden is always buzzing with bees... I have lavender, oregano, catmint, thyme, lambs ear, yarrow, chives and sage. Not to mention that even when not in beautiful lavender/purple bloom, the variegated greens are gorgeous.

And you can eat most of it!
