Wrong Spelling of this Website--Ransom Page
« on: March 11, 2015, 11:59:31 AM »
Hi, not sure if this has been discussed here, but wanted to point something out.

About a month ago, I tried to get on this website from my work computer. I typed in the site name, but spelled mustache with an OU instead of just a U.
A page pulled up with a big warning sign, and told me to call this number right away to fix the virus. It would not let me click off the page. I stated freaking out, thinking I just infected my entire network at my office.
I signed off the server, and powered down the computer. Luckily, that seemed to help.

But just wanted to let you guys know about this in case it's not already known.

Thanks for the heads up, I can see how people would use  the Canadian spelling. I'm not sure if there is anything we can actively do about it though - other then post and warn people.

AFAIK, Pete does not own that domain (so we can't do much about it, as swick notes), someone trying to capitalize on his popularity must have purchased it.  Interesting info though, thanks for sharing.

If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.

Well, I reported it to google.  Hopefully it'll end up in the database that Chrome uses to warn you that the site is malicious and asks if you are sure you want to continue.

By the way, there IS a dispute resolution process.  Could be worth a go for MMM's "legal team."  Could require registration of trademark (good idea anyways and cheap).

Quote
a. Applicable Disputes. You are required to submit to a mandatory administrative proceeding in the event that a third party (a "complainant") asserts to the applicable Provider, in compliance with the Rules of Procedure, that

(i) your domain name is identical or confusingly similar to a trademark or service mark in which the complainant has rights; and

(ii) you have no rights or legitimate interests in respect of the domain name; and

(iii) your domain name has been registered and is being used in bad faith.
