site problems?
« on: July 25, 2014, 06:59:45 AM »
Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem?
Over the past few days the site gives me a lot of 503 errors and the message
 "Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later."

No other problems with other sites, only this one.

Thanks,

This has always seems to happen once a day at about the same time. I assumed that since I was in Australia, they actually take the site down once a day at that time.

This happens to me a lot more than once a day. Lately, once every couple of hours.

No it was all the angry wifeys writing in agreement at the same time that MMM really is ruining their marriages.

Server overloaded at the sight of it.

Yesterday and today have been extremely bad. The forum nor the actual webpage would load at all. I'm very surprised I am able to post this at all right now. Even sites like isup.me would show mmm as being down.

Hmmm we seem to have lost the "View new posts" and "view new replies" options...

presumably these were disabled while investigating the forum problems?

Ahh, I see the urls have changed from:

mrmoneymustache.com/forum/unreadreplies/

to

http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/index.php?action=unread

I almost never used the direct link from the clickable buttons but rather have been using previous sites (in chrome, typing mr.. prepopulates recent links).

I haven't actually clicked through that for... a long time. hah.

MOD NOTE: Much of the instability over the past couple of weeks has been due to some software not being able to handle the traffic. Admin has been working on the problem over the past couple of days (hence the downtime and stranger than usual error messages) you should notice a vast improvement shortly. If you note more problems, please post or PM one of the Admins or Mods.

Over the past week I've had lots of instances where the site will fail to respond for minutes up to hours. I gather based on MMM's most recent post that there's extra traffic coming towards the site, but it's frustrating nonetheless.

Looks like MMM should probably run these forums on another web server to help distribute the load a little more evenly...budget allowing, of course.  :)

Getting ads that redirect the page to a page in the iOS app store (on my iPad). At least in the past, these were something not requested by MMM, but something the ad server did that was not desired.

If it is desired, well, sigh, but they're annoying. Just my $0.02.

The last 10 hours were more off- then online.

Also, if you type site problems in the search this thread does not show up :(

Probably because the phrase wasn't in any posts, and it appears it may not search titles? (Advanced search aside.)

I just searched for that phrase now (all subforums), and it was the 4th thread.

I've been running into a few problems before yesterday's big outage. I'm not sure whether they are things that have been around forever, are linked to the outage or are separate.

When I finish updating a post, the screen goes to the list for the subforum that post is in - say "investor alley" (although this happens with any subforum). While I am in the subforum, I check out posts marked "new" to see if there are any interesting ones. Sometimes, there are posts marked "new" which were last updated a week ago - and that shouldn't happen, because each day I mark all the ones I don't read with "mark all read" when I go through them. Also, sometimes when this is happening, I "reload current page" with the browser and different posts are marked "new".

If someone edits the last post (maybe any post?) it marks it as new.

However, if it is edited, it goes to the top of the list - because the list is in edited order. These are things that are further down the list, And there is often a clump of them all marked "new" - and it doesn't explain that when it is in that state, others (which I think were in the same position before the reload) are marked new. It has been happening over the past week, and one happened this morning after the reload. The next time it happens, I will take screenshots, and add them to this post.

I have now seen one - "One month, One Habit". It had not been edited after the last post on 7 March our time (6 March your time), yet came up as new today, and was marked as read by me yesterday.

Further, ther is a clump of three in the second attachment, one of which has no edits. Everything was marked as read by me yesterday, so non of these should be marked as new today.

A lot of users + software not optimized for large sites = high server loads and excessive memory usage. In the past I owned a large forum like this and these problems were common. I know MMM likes the "DIY" approach, but at some point a site grows to the point where professional help is needed.

As a new member, I've noticed that this site is very unstable compared to most other sites I've used. (thought I still enjoy the content when I can get it to load).

It generally works from my laptop (through whatever wireless connection I'm using at the time).

It never works from my mobile device (SG3)... just returns 503 errors.
