Looking for your help selecting retirement account funds!
« on: November 18, 2014, 08:42:01 PM »
I am looking for some investing guidance and feedback. I am a new participant in two workplace retirement accounts. One is my Deferred Compensation Roth 403b plan and the other is my Pension Defined Contribution account. I am in my mid-twenties and therefore I am looking for investments for the long haul. I am hoping to get feedback on my allocation and fund selections. Currently I contribute 300 dollars a month to my Roth 403b plan and roughly 300 dollars a month to my pension (including employers contribution. Below I have laid out my current investments for each plan followed by the fund options for each account.  Please share with me your thoughts on my choices. Thank you!

I recommend sticking with the Vanguard options because the fees are usually the lowest.
For example, in your 403B, your option of Vanguard Institutional Index I Large Cap (VINIX), is essentially the S&P 500 Index fund, and has an extremely low expense ratio of 0.04%
Your defined contribution pension has Vanguard Total Intl Stock Index Inv International ( VGTSX) which probably will have a much lower expense ratio than the Oakmark International.
Index funds usually outperform actively managed funds while simultaneously having lower expense ratios than actively managed funds.

You left out the expense ratios which is a very important, if not the most important, factor. You should list the top 10 lowest cost options and then people can help you choose between those.

Also, you might ask this question over in the "Ask a Mustachian" forum. I bet you get more responses.

My first thought too.  That's being said, here's key aspects to look for:

- Expense ratios below 0.25%
- Names like Vanguard, Fidelity
- Index Funds

Also, think of your 403b and pension as one retirement account, meaning you pick the best funds from each and don't try to "diversify" each of them individually.  Here's my suggestions:

403B:
Vanguard Institutional Index - VINIX - 100%

Pension:
Vanguard Total International Stock Index - VGTSX - 50%
Vanguard Small Cap Index - VSMAX - 50%

Your overall retirement savings would then be:
- 50% Large Cap
- 25% Small Cap
- 25% International

Some of the other funds (i.e. Dodge & Cox) are very good and worth researching in the future.  But for starting out, I would suggest the approach above.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
