Title: Forum Rules
Post by: arebelspy on August 12, 2013, 06:07:58 PM
The overriding principle here on this site: Be a human being and treat others respectfully.

That includes, but is not limited to:
1. Don't be a jerk.
2. Attack an argument, not a person.
3. Your posts must not break any laws.
4. Be respectful of the site and other members.
5. No spam.
6. Use good taste.  (See example below, 5/11/15.)

While we encourage open discourse, enforcement of the above rules will be done solely at the moderators' discretion.  If you have any questions, feel free to PM a moderator.

(Rules created 8/12/13.)

10/3/13 Edit:
Try to stay towards the top of Graham's Hierarchy of Disagreement:

4/1/14 Edit:
You may only share a referral code for each particular product or company once, on the entire forum.  Promoting the same code over and over is considered spamming.

5/21/14 Edit:
"Spam" in rule number 5 ("No spam.") includes linking to your own blog.  You may add a link to your blog in your signature, and it will show up under every post you make.  Please do not start a new thread just to link to a post you wrote.  If the content is good enough, others will do that for you.  If your blog post is relevant to another thread that is ongoing, feel free to add the link, but do not abuse this - if too many of your posts are direct links to your own content, that is spammy.  Enforcement will be at the moderators' sole discretion.  If you are not sure, please contact a moderator before posting.

5/11/15 Edit:
Rule #6 added: "Use good taste." There's nothing wrong with using good, solid, hyperbole and exaggeration in a metaphor, but we expect our members to refrain from tasteless comparisons that are completely out of proportion.  As an example, it not appropriate to compare rape, domestic assault, or genocide to unfair business practices that result in being overcharged for a service.

Enforcement of Rules

If you break one of the above rules, you will receive a warning indicating the post that broke the rules.  You may also receive temporary bans, which can range from 3 days to 3 weeks.

There is a "three strikes" policy--if you break the forum rules three times, despite multiple warnings and/or temporary bans, you will be banned permanently.

This is subject to change; if it does, the change will be posted here.

In all cases, you will be notified of what rule you broke.  Feel free to PM a moderator with any questions.

Cheers!

EDIT 8/27/16: Added information about "warnings," a new moderation feature.

Rule #6 added to address recent issues. (And typo in it fixed 6/6/17.)
