What happens if you 'add someone to buddy list'?

Never checked this box because I have no idea what will happen if I do and I don't want to come across as a crazy forum stalker. 

Can someone tell me what the function of this feature is?

Basically, it's just a way to make it easier to contact the people you like.

I was thinking it might help me follow people whose posts I usually find interesting.

It just creates a list?  I suppose a list could help me remember their forum handles.

Are they notified in any way?
