Hi all - I just wanted to swing back and thank everybody who shared their opinion here.
I went ahead with the business sale. It settled in late June. The price was, I think, good for us both. I certainly could have gotten a lot more had I created a plan to build it back up to where it was 18 months ago, but I was honestly so drained from the past few years that I decided letting it go and leaving room for the new owner to add value was in everybody's best interest. It's strange because I was so crazy passionate when creating the products and building the business. I don't know if it was my stage of life, a seven-year itch (the business just turned seven), the economy, burnout from the past few years, or what, but I just really had lost 90% of my passion. I figure when the economy is good, you can get by without passion, but when it's a grind, it's the passion that gets you through.
I'm now working on my old business (I lost to Covid) but have built off-ramps -- it's something that has changed a lot in the past decade (almost like we were known for manufacturing great quality vinyl records - some people still listen to them, but it's a bit of a hard sell and will never be the business model it was a few decades ago). With AI, I don't believe it has much of a future, but right now there are lots of tax-free lifestyle 'perks' associated with it. Plus, I've worked for myself for nearly 30 years so I'm not sure I'm even employable!
What's next? I think DH and I are ready to really start getting a plan together around retiring in the next couple of years. We probably could now, but would need to sell an investment property, and with two kids and the way the world is, we don't feel right cashing out on that (which was always the plan). I sometimes think it would be great to start an e-commerce business again and maybe I will one day, but not right now. I've worked full-time for the past 35 years so I think a little bit of mental space is needed before I decide whether I want to jump back into anything too serious. Right now I'm enjoying having weekends - a novelty after the past few years!
Thanks again for your help and input - I truly appreciate those who replied and those who DMd me.
