Turo experience?
« on: August 21, 2019, 09:14:20 AM »
I am considering getting into the Turo business with a sports car. I am thinking of either getting a Porsche Boxster or the 2020 Corvette and renting it in a very very large tourist town in the Rockies.

I have a parking spot lined up that is on a heavily trafficked road and permission to hang a sign above it.

I am looking for anyone with any experience on Turo. The car would be purchased just as a business purchase.
Thank you for any insights you can provide!

I listed my family car on Turo earlier this year as an experiment. I posted it at a fairly high price because I figured it would be a little bit of a PITA to do it, especially since I've got two young children and the vehicle is always a mess.

So, after about 3 months of not hearing anything, and forgetting I'd ever put it on Turo, I suddenly got an offer for people wanting to rent it out for about 4 days for $350. I got my butt in gear and scrubbed the heck out of the car, put some local maps and other useful items they'd need in it, and delivered it to the airport for them.

The experience was really good. The car was the same as I gave it to them when they returned and they were easy to deal with overall.

We live in an area known for tourism, so I think it's pretty easy to get higher prices here. What we're wondering now is if we should do what you're talking about - buy a second vehicle and use it exclusively for Turo, with the idea of paying it off ridiculously fast and then just making money off of it on Turo or selling it... Still trying to decide if we should make the leap.

I was thinking of doing something like this. Did you end up getting a second vehicle exclusively for Turo? How did it work out?

No! Shortly after I wrote my original message I got a letter from our local airport saying that if I wanted to keep offering airport pickup on Turo, I'd need to become a vendor with the airport and pay a 30% fee. Nope! I removed the airport pickup option and haven't gotten an inquiry since.

I might look into this again in the future, but besides the fee cutting into my margains, I'm guessing the paperwork on this would be a PITA, which wrecks it for me as a side gig.

Ok, so first, I have homework for you.  Watch ALL the videos on Dan thenormalsupercar guy's channel specifically about his and his partners' renting of cars on Turo.

https://www.youtube.com/user/dbhurlbert/search?query=turo

(or if you don't want to, be prepared because your car will be damaged.  Turo considers even a gouge 2 inches long to not be damage, but normal wear and tear)

Then go ahead and watch Ed Bolian's videos about renting supercars if you want (VINWiki).  He says that everyone doing this typically rents for less than their own cost.

Most people who rent on Turo and actually track their income and expenses lose money.
