Title: Thinking of teaching a Woman's awareness/self defense program
Post by: zoochadookdook on April 29, 2019, 11:16:37 AM
Hey all,

I've always been enamored with self employment/having a flexible schedule. Through college I would buy and sell computer hardware (grossing around 35k/year off maybe 10 hours a week). After I accepted a full time 45/hr week job last month I don't really have time for that (although I may revert back to it).

I just received my brown belt after 9 years in the 10th planet system of jiu jitsu and have been toying with the idea of teaching a practical defense course on the weekends for women or similar. There's so many crap "defense" classes/videos that are teach unrealistic and awful things (grabbing a weapon/trying a technique that's never going to work with a bigger attacker etc). Grappling is cool because it's based on knowledge overcoming physical ability, which I believe would be a huge asset to just about anyone looking to defend themselves.

I currently belong to a gym but I'm looking around at other spots (community center etc) that I could do this in. Just for the basis that I don't want a financial relationship to impede my current relationship with my gym owner/friend. I'm also working on pricing as it seems like this kind of stuff is all over the map.

Anyone thought of doing similar? I know it's unique.

My sister has been involved for many years with an organization (Wen Do Women's Self Defence) that teaches exactly what you are talking about: physical self-defence techniques that work against larger, heavier aggressors, and also verbal techniques, attitudes, avoidance strategies, etc. She books gigs with various community organizations, schools, corporations, and so on; she did a workshop for my daughter's scout troop, for instance. It is very flexible time-wise; for years my sister supported herself doing a combination of regular part-time work, this, and two other kinds of freelancing.

You would have to go through their training to offer their courses, which may or may not be feasible for you, since Wen-Do is based in Toronto. But I bet you could talk to them for ideas.

Great thanks! Shooting them a email right now.
