Quick survey for my “market research”!
« on: April 30, 2018, 06:29:01 PM »
Quick survey for my market research.  I’m slowly putting together the pieces of my t-shirt business (regional, niche type designs).  I’m between two choices/directions with the specific garment, and here’s my hypothetical question:

If you were to purchase a tshirt to wear when on the weekends as a part of an outfit (ie meaning not while you are mowing the lawn or painting the house...a “nice T-shirt”), would you rather the shirt be made in the USA and 100% organic cotton (but more expensive), or made overseas, conventionally grown cotton, (but cheaper)?  Same design either way.

Cheaper. (I’m also probably not in the target market, as I wear “T shirts without holes” as work clothes and “T shirts with holes” as yard work and weekend clothes.)

I need more context. Can you give some sample prices?

Will all of the t-shirts be "mens cut" or will you also sell womens tees? Many women, myself included, will not wear mens t-shirts anymore. (If you're thinking "what's the difference," please do some additional research.)

I would encourage to ask this question to your target market, which may not be represented well here.

I will also point out that market for Made in the USA, the market for Organic, and the market for "nice T-Shirt" is the overlap of a Venn diagram, which will be a different diagram than the one for "cheap" and "imported".

Depends on the context of the shirt.  If it has an AR-15 and say Bless 'Merica - Then made in American might appeal.  Otherwise I don't think it matters much.  :)

Thanks Zaz.  My research has shown similar brands on the market for $25-$35 with the higher end being organic cotton and hand printed.  I’m thinking about hand printed, organic, made in the USA for around $30 per shirt.  Lower margins than using cheaper brands but hopefully a differentiator.

Wow, this is definitely the wrong forum to be asking about $30 t-shirts...  I expect not much of your target market is here.

I'm not in the USA but I definitely give preference to items made in my own country if I can - if not I tend to do for quality, not just cheap (but within reason too).

I would find the USA organic shirt in the local thrift store for a couple bucks.

High quality, all cotton, durable.

Price is less of a priority.

I think the best way to do this type of research is to actually sell both styles, and see which one does better. Every other time the shirt is shown, have it alternate between USA and Imported, and see which one actually sells.
