How to make money blogging?
« on: April 07, 2017, 06:50:02 PM »
I just read through MMM article on: How To Start A Blog. Here's my question: How do you make money off a blog without advertising? MMM doesn't have ads, but say he's making $100,000/year off his blog. Is there a breakdown of how many page visits to $$ ratio anywhere for wordpress?

Monetization is the key factor, how you do it, value of audience, value of content. I had a site that was getting around 100 to 400 visits a day and making ~40k a month. It just depends on what its about.

I would recommend find something you are passionate about, something you LOVE to learn about and write about. Then start looking at how you could monetize it to get a side gig up. As there are a lot of very popular sites with a ton of traffic that don't make much money because the audience is not worth anything.

I am happy to brainstorm if you have any ideas for topics you like and how to monetize it past just ads.

There isn't a visits/$ ratio because it isn't piecemeal work.
There are many blogs that don't make money - some of them aren't trying to make money.
The most common way to make money w/o advertising*  is called affiliate marketing.  They're links in the blog that give the blogger a small fee each time they're clicked and an bigger fee if someone buys something at the site the link takes them to.
* - I astricked 'advertising' because it could be easily argued that the whole blog is, in effect, an advertisement of what the blogger knows (or sells).

I looked into blogging not long ago.  It seemed that the majority of the 'successful' ones I found were about making money blogging.

I'm not aware of any affiliate programs that pay you per click and pay you for a signup. Do you know any?

You're making $2-$10 per unique visitor? That's ridiculously awesome, congrats! I don't know how much you're comfortable sharing if anything, but I'm assuming you're selling either a product or service given that type of revenue?

Yep this was back in 2006/2007/2008, so a bit more of the wild west. Genre was web hosting related sites with a very tight focus (affiliate marketing). Sold the entire business many many years ago and I think zdnet ended up buying from the company who bought us.

Fun times, still a lot of great opportunities out there but the SEO game is much different.

He has minimal ads.

The bulk of his income is from product referrals. Check out the "MMM Recommends" page and the tons of affiliate links.
 That's allllll $$$$.

Jim Dahle opens the kimono every year for his very successful "White Coat Investor" blog:

Affiliate links are the obvious answer.

Or you use your blog to demonstrate that you're an expert in your field and offer value to people.

My blog makes ~$20-$30/mo in ads and affiliate links.  I make an awful lot more than that from battery pack rebuilds - and people find me and get in touch with me because of my blog.

I don't think most bloggers are pulling in what MMM is in general- it's the exception not the rule. Though I know of a few who blog and that's their sole income stream. Soulemama was one I found quite a while ago and she does paid ads along the side that are paid direct to her so not like google adwords or whatever.

khizr,

Do you know much about current SEO ?  If so, would you be willing to spare any time to offer some advice on a math blog that I run?

Thanks
Scott
