More active Entrepreneur forum?
« on: December 10, 2021, 10:36:35 AM »
I like MMM forum for ER stuff but the Entrepreneur section gets a very small amount of traffic compared to the main areas.

What is everyone's favorite entrepreneur forums?

Sorry I’m not answering your question at all. I like reading this section, but don’t have anything to contribute. Rental property is kind of like being an entrepreneur, but that already has its own place in the forum.

@Kroaler I think maybe the best forums for entrepreneurs are those specific to the industry someone operates in?

That's at least what's true for the small CPA firms. There are FB groups and Linkedin groups for example that collect together a few thousand CPAs. Those can provide good insights for folks. Maybe poke around for those? Just an idea...

Just updating my findings in case anyone else stumbles across this.

So yes to the trade specific areas of the internet. Those are very helpful.

I also recommend reading things that arent specific to your industry.

I realize reddit can be toxic, and you have no way to fact someone's credentials, but ideas are free.

I find the reddit small business and entrepreneurship areas to be good reads. I prefer to read problems and solutions in other types of businesses, it gives a wider exposure.

In fact im actually stealing an idea I saw from an ecommerce thread and applying it to my HVAC business. I don't remember the names, but someone came up with a solution that measures how long a person is rummaging around an area looking for something and how often they go to that area using RFID tags and an App.

I'm going to take that into my HVAC business by adding the RFID tags to the inside of the install truck box so we are gathering data about how efficient we are by measuring:

1.) How many trips someone has to make from the home back to the truck for parts - (Measures how efficient we are on planning and packout)
2.) How long someone is digging around the truck looking for something (Measures how efficient we are at 5s of the truck workspace)

If I had stuck to HVAC only forums, I would have never had the aha moment.

I only read Richard Branson's blog on LinkedIn. I would be glad to hear other recommendations

Maybe look at linkedin? There, people's credentials and professional history are pretty public. (Good linkedin groups exist for CPAs, for example. I'm actually one of the admins for one of the larger ones.)

I haven't found any good ones. And I think the reason's because there's so many businesses out there that most of what everyone says will be somewhat irrelevant to other folks.

For example, ideas about dropshipping might not work for someone selling a niche one-product item. And someone doing a one-product ecommerce store might not even have advice to give to someone else selling another one-product store.

And neither of those will be able to talk to the HVAC guy or the CPA guy.

As such, readership will be low because most people will find most things irrelevant to the particulars of their business details. The only way where there's high signal-to-noise is if everyone spoke in really abstract / high-level terms. But there's enough books to do that woo-woo stuff already and most of that stuff doesn't really help anybody past the entry-level of business.

"I realize reddit can be toxic,"

Agreed. I am constantly shocked by how politics seeps into EVERYTHING at reddit.

It's a cess pit of mental disorder.

But some tiny sections have value

E-commerce is complicated. There are tons of different e-commerce businesses out there. Most of them will not be applicable to you. And unfortunately, with e-commerce there's also way more "guru" information out there.

Poke around communities that seem interesting, provide value to them first, but move on quickly if you find they do not provide value.

Just my $.02
