By default I've wound up with a bunch of domains on GoDaddy, which I hate. And I need to set up some new ones.
What's the best bullshit-free service these days, that's straightforward and easy to use, cheap without lame coupons, no barriers to transfer, etc?

Check this company out: https://www.ait.com/domains/
They are a hosting company that I have used off and on for many services since the late 90's. Probably not the cheapest but no nonsense.

I use google, which $12 s url a year and not that great. Make a decision and move on.

I forgot to mention another good company to check out.

I use AWS and like the flexibility, but that cuz I have EC2 instances too. It’s $12 a year for most domains.

There's really only three TLD providers I'd use these days depending on the needs/purpose of the domain:
gandi.net
namecheap.com
nearlyfreespeech.net
Given your original ask, you'll probably like Gandi's corporate philosophy, which is also their business byline... though, of the three they're the most expensive - but to their credit, you get a lot for it.

We use joker.com to manage ~150 domains right now.
We use it mostly cause that's what we always used, but the prices are good and the tools are reasonable so haven't really been motivated to investigate anything else.

I'll second namecheap.com (https://www.namecheap.com/)

Been using namecheap for ages, they are huge now, super reliable and simple. I wouldn't use anyone else. Have several hundred domains with them.

I've been using Dreamhost for years. I used Weebly for building my site, which was very simple.

I use namecheap both personally and at work.
