Hello Mustachians,
I found MMM in the last month and have been reading through the blog from the start. I've been looking for ways to cut my expenses and increase my know-how knowledge to boot.
I have a cracked up slap of concrete in my driveway. It has been there since we moved in, to be honest it doesn't bother me. But it does bother my wife and when the neighbors paid to have theirs re-poured about a year ago she was interested enough to get a quote on the job. The quote came in at $3,500-5,000!!!!
Anyways, my sons birthday is coming up - he is turning 6. Lucky me, I found a portable Basketball goal, MSRP $250, sitting at the curb at a house that sold/in process of moving. The goal looks to be in good shape. So, now I have a reason beyond vanity to have a flat smooth driveway.
My steps to repairing:
1) Smash up the concrete with a sledgehammer and a chisel
2) Cut out root that smashed up my driveway
3) Frame the concrete pour
4) Mix the quickcrete
5) Pour and smooth
6) Play basketball
I took a sledgehammer and started smashing the concrete up last weekend. It cracked very easily but I found that it came off in chunks only 3 inches deep while the slab is about 6 inches, so everything started to turn into little rocks. Once I got down to the dirt I found the culprit...a massive pine tree root about 5 inches in diameter. It started to get dark so this is where I am paused right now. The plan is to take an axe/chainsaw, destroy the root and then get all the supplies ready to pour the quickcrete on Saturday.
