Women's layered haircut YouTube video
« on: October 24, 2013, 01:22:13 PM »
I literally cut my own hair yesterday thanks to this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQrgRn_dsw4 and it worked super well!! I like this video since it's very easy to see what she's doing since her hair is light on a dark background.

I have loosely curly hair, so I had to spray each section with water as I cut it, and I was able to follow the layers from the last time my stylist cut it in August (just as Sylvia does in the video, my stylist pulls my hair straight up for more dramatic layers; I watched what she did when I was there last time since I was contemplating going DIY). I only cut off about 1/4" of hair to get rid of split ends, but I plan on doing this every six weeks and do a more dramatic cut in the spring once it starts warming up. Even if I get one pro cut a year, this is going to save me sooo much money, and avoid haircut disappointment forever. Wahoo!

I found it's easier to do layers by putting my hair up in a series of pony/pigtails.

I start by putting my hair in pigtails high up on each side.  Then holding the pigtail parallel to the ground, I cut the desired length off.
After that, I put my hair in a pony tail in the back as high up as the pig tails had been and cut the same way to make the layers uniform all the way around.  Then I put my hair in a pony tail at the nape of my neck and cut any additional length that I need removed. Voila!

Thanks for posting this!  I started cutting my own hair about a year ago.  I was paying $35 a haircut, and one day I asked myself, why am I paying so much to get my hair done?  So I started buying cheaper cuts (~$18), and said, why am I paying someone at all?  Now I cut my own hair all the time.  It's so much more convenient than going to a salon and you can give yourself little trims every 4-5 weeks instead of trying to stretch out the time between trims (which is what I always did when I was paying someone else.  Not a bad way to save a couple hundred dollars a year!

I just tried cutting my own hair tonight, and I think it's my BEST haircut ever. Seriously easy and turned out awesome.

I did a combo of this for the layers (even though my hair's only shoulder length): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1SVhIr_-6M
And this for the length/back: http://www.do-love-be.com/post/2013/03/18/Cut-your-own-hair-at-home-FAST-and-EASY-Mid-length-hair-style.aspx

My wife uses the ponytail trick and it looks AWESOME.  She's never gotten more comments on her hair than when she started cutting it herself that way.

I gave myself another cut earlier this week, and managed to convince my DH to let me cut his hair. The first time, I just did a very conservative trim, but he let me full-on cut it this weekend since it looked so shaggy and he was going to be presenting for a grad school class this week and didn't have time to schedule a cut. He got compliments at work on it. From teenage girls, who said it looked cool. *winning*

Thanks for bringing this up! I'm totally going to try cutting my own hair soon. My Mom has a good set of hair cutting scissors so I'll try it out and possibly put scissors on my Xmas wishlist :)

Good luck! I actually used my kitchen shears, because they were the sharpest scissors in the house :)

Just in case anyone might find it useful, I used these two videos to learn how to cut my DH's hair: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhdY29pj7c0 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7t6ZzNVTDA

I got a $20 shears and a fine toothed comb that reduces static at Sally Beauty Supply.

I just cut my hair! I love it.

If you want just photos--and not a video--here is a link. Note that this tutorial doesn't show us how the woman gets bangs. As far as I can tell, that remains a mystery:

Thanks, all!

This is great stuff! I tried the ponytail technique once years before and it wasn't that great, but I'm motivated to try again for my next cut. I just got a haircut last weekend since it had been a full year since my previous one and it honestly wasn't that great. I'll bookmark this for the next time.

Thank you for this! I'm definitely going to try it. I was dissatisfied with my last two haircuts, and they cost $70!!

I've been telling my wife I was going to cut my own hair for a while now. She insists that I go to a stylist instead. I don't really want to spend $25 to get a couple inches cut off my head. I dress myself, bath myself, feed myself, and cut my own facial hair with a straight blade razor - surely I can cut my own head hair!

Do you ladies have any resources for men's cuts for a guy that likes it long? My hair is on my shoulders now and I usually get about 2-3 inches cut off at my twice-annual hair cut. Any pointers would be appreciated.

What kind of style do you have? Is it just the same length all around with no layers? You should be able to DIY that similar to the original video I posted in the thread, without the second step of layers. Just section it and pull it to the front so you can see what you're doing. Or search YouTube for videos on DIY haircutting. A lot of stylists post videos with a huge variety of haircuts. Maybe your wife would want to try her hand at cutting or simply trimming your hair? It's a low risk proposition, since you can always go in and have it fixed if it turns out weird. That's how I convinced my DH to let me cut his hair.

I'm glad you share this. That second video is cute, especially how she writes she likes the song too much to mute it (and played it over her voice). I saw that video a long time ago and am glad to see it again.

I have thin, easily-screwed up hair, and got tired of paying $40+ for every haircut. I just did this - worked fantastic, and I can still work on growing my hair out too.

Love it!!  Thanks for sharing. Tried it and I love how it turned out. Much better than getting this kind of layered cut at a hair stylist.

I did the shlob a month or so ago...http://www.howtohairgirl.com/tag/shlob/

This is my favourite hair cut in a long time. I have been regularly disappointed by my chops over the last # of years. I would grow it out, the hair dresser would have TONS of hair to work with but it was always shapeless (I have very wavy hair, they would always straighten it and then cut it...I maybe straighten my hair 1/year so that really wasn't reflective of how I wore my hair and once it was washed and back to it's normal self the cut was never great.

Not so with the shlob. It was easy, I chunked it up quite a bit at the back to lighten it up. It's growing out fabulously.

I watched a few different videos and ended up doing the second link you posted since it was the simplest and this was my first time cutting my hair. It turned out great! I cut about 2 inches of split ends off. I'll probably take another inch or two off in a few weeks, or graduate to the more involved layering techniques people have posted and refresh my bangs.

Last year I was going in for a trim every 8-9 weeks. My hair looked great but at $50 a visit it wasn't worth it. Before someone mentioned it on the forum I would have NEVER considered cutting my own hair. I can't believe how easy it was!!
