why is my netbook so slow?
« on: February 21, 2014, 04:56:00 PM »

I've had this netbook ASUS Eee PC since 2011. I upgraded to 2GB of RAM and everything else is the same. It's just been too slow for me recently, it's my only computer. I only use google chrome and YNAB and I have norton antivirus on there. Should I be selling it and look for something else? Can I speed this badboy up? If it wasn't for YNAB I wouldn't even need a PC, I could get one of those chromebooks or something.

If it's still running Windows 7, there are a few services and such you can disable to try to get it running faster. I've Googled for these before, don't remember where to find them now. I'll note though that I tried all this once and it didn't seem to make that much of a difference.

The better option: install Xubuntu or Lubuntu on it. You can install YNAB on Linux, but it will be difficult. The trick is to install Adobe AIR which isn't supported on Linux anymore, but old versions exist that you can still install manually. Ask if you need help, I've done it once or twice before.

Possibly dump Norton depending on how much it slows the system down.  I don't run antivirus on my netbook because I found it to be too much of a resource hog (though I only have 1GB of RAM in there, WinXP).

Windows tends to gradually get stale, so a reinstall of Windows might speed things up.
