Fram Ultra has a very good reputation on the bobistheoilguy.com forums, is less expensive than most other "premium" / synthetic-oil / designed-for-extended-oil-changes filters, and has a grippy coating which makes it much easier to install and remove on my Miata (which has very little clearance -- I can barely get my hand in there, let alone a tool).
Regular orange Fram filters are utter garbage, prone to actual failure (not just poor filtering), and IMO should never be used.
I use Fram Ultra on my Miata and Ranger. On my VW TDI, which uses cartridge filters, I buy Mann or Mahle (which are OEM suppliers to VW).
