Where to begin? Install sliding door into exterior wall
« on: August 03, 2016, 09:29:43 AM »
Hi there- My dream is to cut a hole in the wall and install a sliding glass/screen door that goes out into the back yard.

I've never tackled anything this major before.

Questions:

-where to buy sliding door
-where to learn about re-framing
-any other good resources on the inter-webs?

Thanks!

Unless you absolutely need a sliding door, I would consider a double glass swinging door.   One leaf that stays shut and is held closed with head & foot bolts, and the other leaf as your active, high use leaf.  Every sliding door I've ever had works great when new, but eventually operates hard and is a general pain in the butt.   Hinged doors simply work better.

Pretty simple job for a good carpenter, but might seem pretty tough to someone inexperienced.
I'd recommend you acquire some help for this, or at least do a bunch of reading, watch youtubes, etc. before starting.

Ditto on the above.  Framing is not for the novice, hinged doors seem to outlast sliders.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
