What are these DIY brackety thingies called?
« on: July 05, 2016, 07:28:59 AM »
I'm trying to order some things to make a simple frame of 2"x1" wood on a flat stand but I don't know what they're called and can't find them in any of the obvious sections on DIY store websites. They're like L-brackets (these things: http://g02.a.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1k4nyIpXXXXXVXFXXq6xXFXXX7/free-shipping-thickening-stainless-font-b-steel-b-font-font-b-corner-b-font-font-b.jpg) but go all the way round in a big square, so you can fit a post onto a flat piece of wood. Like this thing for a fence post but small: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/e8/12/dc/e812dc883bfa4031ad8b6481d220c13c.jpg

What are they called? Do they even exist or have I imagined them?

Screwfix doesn't seem to have anything like that in the catalogue, which makes me think they're not common. I suppose they would need to be exactly the dimension of the piece of wood that fits inside,  a problem which using 2 (or more) angle brackets or corner braces doesn't have.

Can you use a flagpole stand?  Or a really big candle holder?

Hm... I wonder if I did just make them up? Using multiple L brackets is my backup plan, but I was so totally convinced that these things existed.

DH is Mr. Fixit. I'll ask him when he gets home from his job fixing things. He's the best at figuring things out.
Also the box stores are generalists. Specialty cabinet making supplies are not their thing. Hang on, help should be on the way.

Are you looking for a wall flange?

If there is a floor flange available in a 1x2 dimension, it's probably going to be pretty pricey, especially if you need a few. There are dozens of ways to accomplish this task, depending on exactly what you are trying to do. For a quick DIY, you could use the corner braces shown in your first link. A pair of them, on the wider dimension of the upright, would actually be pretty substantial. Beyond that, there is the possibility of both gluing and screwing the joint together, or even using a Kreg jig to drill a long hole in the "leg" which would allow you to bury a screw in the upright, and firmly attach it to the base. You would be amazed at how a single wood screw, drilled and installed from under the base, up into the leg, with a few dabs of yellow wood glue, can result in a rock solid joint.

Yep, they are more expensive that I thought so I'm going to opt for a pair of corner braces, but I'm glad I'm not going mad!

I don't clearly understand what you are building, but tightly fitted, glued and fastened wood on wood joints are typically as good or better than you will accomplish with a metal bracket.

I agree . . . it appears to be an over complicated and/or expensive way to create a joint, but I also cannot picture the specific application.

There's a flat base and then two uprights and one cross piece. It's to hang stuff on as part of an art project and then people interact with it. It'll get pretty bashed about with teenagers yanking it this way and that, so I wanted some extra reinforcement where the uprights meet the base.

Sorry I couldn't find this post yesterday. DH says a post holder is another thingy that might be what you're thinking of. Also look at google images for "uni-strut" brackets. He agrees with paddedhat's reply. His best wild ass guess is that a fencing supply company might have something that could work. Hope this helps!

+1 for pocket holes - very solid and cheap solution. I used them for dimensional lumber (I don't think it's designed for it, but it works amazingly well) and ordinary wood screws. My reasoning for trying it was to use super-cheap 2" subfloor screws instead of 2.5"-3" construction screws. I built a biggish chicken coop almost solely with them, now I use them everywhere. I bought the simplest jig kit for $20 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00065WPP2 , gone through at least a thousand holes and still counting. In the wake of my pocket holes obsession I wanted to buy a bigger jig like this http://www.harborfreight.com/portable-pocket-hole-jig-kit-96264.html  but then realized that it's easier to clamp jig to a 10' 2x6 rather than put 10' 2x6 into a jig.
I still resort to conventional screws when I think load bearing is critical. And clamp the jig very tight when drilling.

You could also look at railing brackets - also called shoes or flanges.
